e-Waste
What is e-Waste?
Electronic equipment, when it is crushed or otherwise, in going into a normal landfill gives off highly toxic gases and other residues
Old computers, monitors, laptops or even cellphones need to be specially handled.
Pikitup has specialist e-waste facilties at the Victory Road recycling centre. [We haven't yet tested that facility - so cannot vouch for them]
For more information on e-Waste go to: www.e-waste.org.za, the e-Waste association of South Africa, which details Pikitup's sites and other solutions.
There is a pilot project at Makro, Woodmead sponsored by Fujitsu/Siemens [although you may drop-off any e-waste there]
[They warrant that any old data will not be read, but you may wish to destroy your old hard-drive with a hammer before disposing of it.]
Kindly recount any e-waste experiences which you may have had, to us, by e-mail to: pnr@mweb.co.za

Pavements
Pavements are for people.
They should be safe, clean and green, pedestrian friendly …
Safe
- Unimpeded by litter, overgrowth, rubble, builders material, business and built encroachment.
- Lit at night.
- Paved - at least on one side of the street.
- 'Wheels' accessible.
Good to look at
- Free of litter
- Free of outdoor advertising
- Treed and planted
- Well maintained – no open manholes
- Have smart street furniture i.e. bins, benches, bus shelters.
Sustainable
- Belong to the community
- Indigenous pavement plants provide shade, absorb hydrocarbons, give fruit, are not water greedy.
- Provide recreation space.
- Healthy – no rat food and shelter.
… and part of the integrated transport plan!
