e-Waste

What is e-Waste?

Electronic equipment, when it is crushed or otherwise, in going into a normal landfill gives off highly toxic gases and other residues
Old computers, monitors, laptops or even cellphones need to be specially handled.

Pikitup has specialist e-waste facilties at the Victory Road recycling centre. [We haven't yet tested that facility - so cannot vouch for them]

For more information on e-Waste go to: www.e-waste.org.za, the e-Waste association of South Africa, which details Pikitup's sites and other solutions.

There is a pilot project at Makro, Woodmead sponsored by Fujitsu/Siemens [although you may drop-off any e-waste there]
[They warrant that any old data will not be read, but you may wish to destroy your old hard-drive with a hammer before disposing of it.]

Kindly recount any e-waste experiences which you may have had, to us, by e-mail to: pnr@mweb.co.za

E-Waste

E-Waste Recycling is available at Pikitup's Garden Sites. [site nearest to Parktown North - Victory Road]

Recycling

First:
get everyone in your household to sort waste
[before it goes in the bin]:

Second:
Preferably if you're planning to drive past on another journey [westward], or make a special trip.
Every few weeks take the newspapers/magazines and the plastic waste to the recycling centre in Victory road. Mondi staff will generally help you with the newspapers, and the Plastics Federation provides 'cages' for your plastic waste. Consol provides steel bins for glass.

The Reward:

or, why not outsource all this. Support one of the recycling companies. Plese note that Resolution Recycling [the familiar blue and green bins which were collected once a fortnight] recently went into liquidation, citing, amongst other difficulties, "people say they want to be green, but don't expect to pay for the recycling services they receive". Going even a pale shade of green requires a committment - do it because it's "the right thing". Do it for your children - and their children.
