PNRA Objective: To promote the interests of ratepayers and residents of the suburb in local government structures. To represent the interests of property owners and residents in planning, development and land use issues.

Tim Truluck]

Dear 117ites,

It is cold at the moment - we are recovering from our 2nd cold spell and there is no gas to be had for love nor money in the area. Also we are now paying 27.7% more for our electricity from this month. And now there is a fuel shortage.

This newsletter highlights some of the community led initiatives and organisations that are found in the Ward. I have been incredibly impressed with how many committed residents and businesses there are.

In future e-newsletters will attempt to give coverage and support to the organisations below as well as the others like the Rosebank Homeless Association, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Soka Gakkai International (Lay Buddhist), sports clubs and many more.

Please use Monday's celebration of Madiba's 93rd birthday to go out and give more than the 67 minutes of your time. If you are stuck for a cause to support, or have a cause that needs support, please contact me.

Regards

Councillor Tim Truluck
Ward 117, Joburg

Happy Birthday Tata Madiba

"Play your Part" is a new campaign for the Nelson Mandela Foundation that is located in Saxonwold in our ward. The campaign is designed to encourage all South Africans to use the resources at their disposal, whether it’s time, money or skills, for the benefit of their fellow human tbeings. "Play your Part" is aimed at civil society, government, corporate and individuals.

Frank Meintjies, from the Nelson Mandela Foundation, added, “Mandela Day belongs to all of us. We achieve less when we work separately, but we achieve more when we work together. Just like what Nelson Mandela did, we all have a role in our society as ambassadors of this nation to portray our country as a place of hope.” Frank Meintjies, from the Nelson Mandela Foundation, added, “Mandela Day belongs to all of us. We achieve less when we work separately, but we achieve more when we work together. Just like what Nelson Mandela did, we all have a role in our society as ambassadors of this nation to portray our country as a place of hope.”

Mandela Day (18 July) is the birthday of former President Nelson Mandela. People all over the world are encouraged to dedicate at least 67 minutes of their time to do community work in celebration of the values and principles Mandela stands for.

Mandela, who turns 93 this year, will celebrate his birthday at his home in Houghton (Saxonwold and Parkwood used to be in his ward until Ward 117 was created) with 90 kids from all the country’s nine provinces.

Walk the Talk (Sun 24 July 2011)

While this event is mostly in our neighbouring Wards, it will have an impact on Ward 117 in terms of traffic congestion and people flooding through the area for the event. Please be patient and polite. It does have an effect on our businesses, so please make an effort to support them on the day. Visit www.walkthetalk.co.za for more info and maps of the routes.

Solutions to Municipal Problems

For ease of reference, included below are the best methods (at this time) of reporting common Council related issues. Remember that when you communicate issues to me, please always try to include the relevant reference number that you have received from Council. Note: not all issues are issued with reference numbers:

  • Joburg Water (water bursts, no water, sewer leaks, meter leaks, faulty meters, etc.) – send an email to customerservice@jwater.co.za or an SMS to 0826532143.
  • City Power (no power, intermittent power, street lights not working, meter faults) – visit www . citypower . co . za and click “Fault Logging”. Obviously you may not be able get online when there is a power failure so I suggest you register for the SMS/WAP version of the website before you need to make use of it.
  • Joburg Roads Agency (potholes, street signs, traffic signals etc) – send an email to hotline@jra.org.za
  • Revenue Queries (incorrect account’s, non-receipt of account etc) – you HAVE to call the call centre first on 011-375-5555 (Sorry). City Councillors need your fault logging reference # to take up a query for a resident. You can email statements@joburg.org.za but I suggest rather calling.
  • Law Enforcement (traffic violations, noise, dumping, motor vehicle accidents, vagrants causing fires in open parks etc) - call the emergency call centre on 011 375 5911.

Note: the PNRA works together with the incumbent councillor to protect the interests of Parktown North's residents.
